Michael Young (above), the Manila-based saxophonist/model/actor will be performing in New Jersey (Philippine Fiesta People’s Ball and the Philippine Fiesta) and New York (Building Futures Together fund-raiser), Aug. 19-21 and Aug. 24, respectively.

Young was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to a Filipina mother and a German father.

He pursued piano studies at the age of five with his grandmother before transferring to saxophone studies at the age of nine.

He made his Carnegie Hall (N.Y.) debut at 16 before pursuing a BM in Saxophone at the University of Michigan.

He then moved to Los Angeles, where he took up his masters and doctorate degrees in saxophone at the University of Southern California while modeling and acting on the side.

After completing his studies at U.S.C., he moved to Manila.

He moved to the Philippines because he wanted to reestablish his Filipino roots and also contribute to the music scene and culture.
Young had grown up enjoying the melodic songs written by Filipino composers, and he had hoped to expose the Filipino audience to those tunes as played on the saxophone, which is not a common instrument in the Philippines.

He puts his heart and soul into his music.

His saxophone is an integral part of him.

He says that the sax is “my third eye in a way” and helps him visualize, so to speak, the communication of his essence and the soul of his music to bring out an emotional connection with his audience.

In the Philippines, Young has performed with artists as Cynthia Alexander, Lynn Sherman, Tots Tolentino, Johnny Allegre, Nico Maca, Raul Sunico and many more.

He was in the house band of the Lynn Sherman show on RJTV and has performed in the Jewelmer and Ayala Jazz festivals, among others.

He has been the featured performer at many corporate events, and has also served as a master of ceremonies.

He regularly performs in festivals, casinos and clubs.

He is also a model, having appeared in a number of print advertisements and fashion shows.

Furthermore, he is an actor who has appeared in films, television shows and commercials.

Young is an endorser/model of Beverly Hills 6750, Emphasis Salon and Bergamo Suits, and an endorser of The Spa.

He is a professor of saxophone at the University of the Philippines Diliman, University of Santo Tomas and St. Paul University Manila.

He is also an endorser of P. Mauriat saxophones of Taiwan.

He recently released a jazz album titled “A Taste of M.Y.” on Arena Records (with offices in Oslo and Manila).

His classical album, “Scenes From My Life” (Arena), will be released in September.

He is looking forward to returning to the U.S. to the perform at the 13th Annual Philippine Fiesta, Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 20-21 at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, N.J., and at the Philippine Fiesta People’s Ball on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel in East Rutherford, N.J.

Produced by Fernando (Nanding) M. Mendez and Mila Mendez, the Philippine Fiesta is the largest and most successful indoor gathering of Filipinos on the East Coast.

Upwards of 20,000 people are expected to attend this two-day event which features trade exhibits and a Filipino cultural and food festival.
