PIDCI 113th Philippine Independence Day Parade & Street Festival

JUNE 5—All are invited to attend the annual Philippine Independence Day commemoration in NYC presented by the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) under the leadership of elected President Joji J. Jalandoni, RN, BSN, CMC.  On tap for the day are the traditional trio of mega-crowd drawer events:  the all-day Independence Day Street Fair, the Cultural Festival and 2011 Philippine Independence Day Parade led by Grand Marshals Nick and Dr. Edita C. Libramonte. The all day street fair opens at 10 a.m. on Madison Ave. from 24th to 26th streets with a block-long Filipino Food Festival, and another block of corporate and merchants' booths.  The Independence Day Parade opens with brief ceremonies on Madison Ave on 38th Street at 11:45 a.m. and at 12:00 noon starts to wind downtown (South). Hip Hop Writer's Workshop

JUNE 10—In a collaborative effort between a community-based outreach group and a collective of MCs bound by their love for music, a celebration of the innate cooperative spirit fostered by grassroots movements springs to life in Queens, N.Y. Deep Foundation, a longtime staple in New York's underground hip hop scene has banded with the Philippine Forum, a well respected not-for-profit organization that offers direct services to both the Filipino and the larger immigrant community. In a consolidation of resources, the two are proud to announce the launch of The Hip Hop Writer's Workshop, housed in the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center of Woodside Queens, to be instructed by Woodside's own M.U.G. Shot and ILL Poetik, both members of Deep Foundation. The two hour workshop will be open to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 on Fridays at 7PM starting June 10th, 2011. A requested fee of $25 will cover one-year membership of the youth participants to Philippine Forum and contribution to the use of space and maintenance of the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center, which has become a home to community organizations and different youth, workers', and many other programs. The workshop also aims to prepare the participants for upcoming open-mics and the Sumisigaw Youth Festival, one of the festivals organized by the Philippine Forum and SANDIWA National Alliance of Filipino-American Youth, which will be held in October 22. Buklod Group Concelebrated Mass and Fiesta

JUNE 26—This year’s concelebrated mass and fiesta will be held at Our Lady of Visitation Church in Paramus, NJ. The 3 p.m. mass will be followed by a procession, floral offerings, sinulog dance, dinner and some entertainment numbers. The Buklod Group was founded by then Rev Fr. Rudy Osorio, now retired in Cebu City. For many years, the 23-year old organization has been sponsoring scholarships to poor but deserving students of the priesthood.  According to Rev Fr. Arcadio Munoz, Buklod's  adviser and scholarship moderator, as well as parish priest of the St Evangelist Church in Bergenfield, NJ - there are now 14 seminarians for the year 2010-2011. In addition to providing scholarships, the organization's other charitable works include reaching out to the victims of calamities such as the hapless survivors of Japan’s tragic events.
