The Order of the Knights of Rizal - New York Chapter will hold its 2nd Annual Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence in Medicine, Education, Youth, and Arts & Literature on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015 at the Astoria World Manor (25-22 Astoria Blvd., Astoria, NY 11102), following its successful celebration of the Philippine National Hero last year.

The organization is searching for outstanding Filipino professionals in the fields of medicine, education, and arts/literature, as well as exceptional youth who excel both in and out of the classroom.

All Filipinos and Filipino-Americans with Philippine heritage by consanguinity and not affinity are eligible for the award.

Nominees cannot be related by blood or affinity to a Knights of Rizal member of any chapter.

With the exception of the Youth Award, self-nominations are not permitted.

There are no posthumous awards.

The nomination deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015.

Awardees will be notified by e-mail no later than Oct. 10, and their names will be published by the Filipino media.

Medicine Award

Strong candidates will have:

1) practiced medicine for a minimum of 25 years;

2) shown a deep commitment to improving his or her practice;

3) written books or published articles related to medicine;

4) shown outstanding leadership in his or her community.

Education Award

Strong candidates across a wide range of education sectors will have demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following areas:

1) advancement of knowledge through research, teaching, publications or technology as related to the field of education;

2) commitment to exceptional education practice in the classroom as a teacher, principal or district leader;

3) innovation in addressing a challenge in education;

4) leadership in introducing or implementing educational policy at the local, state, federal or international level.

Arts & Literature Award

Strong candidates will have:

1) performed in the tri-state area and/or internationally;

2) exhibited art work in the tri-state area and/or internationally;

3) written books, novels, poems and/or short stories;

4) made an indelible impact on the Filipino community through his or her work in the arts and/or humanities;

5) maintained artistic and intellectual integrity.

Youth Award

Strong youth candidates will have demonstrated excellence in the following categories:

1) Academics — particularly in the sciences, the arts and literature;

2) Talent — visual arts, performing arts and/or athletics;

3) Leadership — community involvement and volunteerism, student government, clubs and church.

Youth candidates may self-nominate.

Youth candidates are required to write an essay about how Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s vision for the Filipino people has impacted his or her own life.

Please also include two letters of recommendation from an adult mentor, a teacher and/or your school principal.

The letters cannot be written by a family member.
