Various participants, teachers and members of the Association of FilAm Teachers of America Inc. join a photo opportunity with Deputy Consul General Felipe Carino III and AFTA President Dr. Roxanne Cajigas after cultural performances during the culminating program of the 19th Paaralan sa Konsulado.

During the culminating program for the 19th Paaralan sa Konsulado (PSK) held on July 22, 2017, the Consulate General led by Deputy Consul General Felipe F. Carino III and officers and members of the Association of FilAm Teachers of America Inc. (AFTA) led by current President Dr. Roxanne Cajigas, welcomed about 50 school-age children who participated in a multi-disciplinary Philippine cultural and heritage program for five Saturdays during the school summer break in the U.S.

This year’s PSK delivered a slew of activities aimed at increasing Filipino language facility, raise art and history awareness, and introduce dance and musical performances to participants, that include modules on Fiesta and Heroes, Rizalism 2017, Pambansang Kasuotan (by Mr. Erno Hormillosa), and an anti-Bullying Empowering Talk by Dr. Joie Calub.

In his remarks, Mr. Carino thanked AFTA and acknowledged their support for programs that educate and encourage Fil-Ams and Filipino children to grow in appreciation for traditional Philippine values, culture and history.

The success of PSK would not have materialized without the leadership by AFTA who continually update the PSK curriculum and programs year in and year out, he added.

Young participants showcase their singing and dancing prowess before family members and friends during cultural performances at Kalayaan Hall.

Dr. Cajigas thanked all the parents for entrusting their children to AFTA to learn Philippine culture, songs and dances, and expressed gratitude to volunteer teachers, AFTA officers and the Consulate General in New York that made the 19th edition of PSK a huge success.

The Paaralan sa Konsulado is a flagship project of the Consulate General in partnership with AFTA.

The PSK counts numerous Fil-Am children as alumni who have moved on to become active members of community-based organizations and Fil-Am associations.

Participants at the 19th Paaralan sa Konsulado learn to recite the pledge to our country during early morning ceremonies at the Philippine Center lobby.
