The University of the Philippines Board of Regents approved the establishment of the Lestrino C. Baquiran, M.D. Professorial Chair in Oncology at the UP College of Medicine in honor of his parents, Corazon S. Baquiran, M.D. and Linda Cachola (both deceased).

The Chair aims to supplement the teaching of new and evolving diagnoses and treatment of cancer.

The award is for a term of three years subject to reappointment or selection of a new recipient.

The Dean’s Office, which is headed by Dr. Charlotte Chiong and assisted by Associate Dean Dr. Liza Antonette Gonzales, is undertaking the search.

After selection, an inaugural lecture is planned.

The donation to fully fund the Chair in perpetuity was coursed through the UPMASA Permanent Endowment Fund.

Dr. Mariano Yogore III, PEF Chair, managed the application and approval process.

Dr. Baquiran belongs to the UPCM Class ’67 and Mu Sigma Phi.

He has practiced Internal Medicine and Cardiology for 45 years in New York City, partnered with Cuban cardiologist Tomas Perez-Sanz, M.D.

He has been involved with UPMASA since its founding, having served as the 1st National Treasurer, Editor in-Chief of the newsletter, Vice-President and Chairman of the Board of Governors.

Retired, he recently published his first book of poems, Methane Sea.
