JERSEY CITY (APRIL 22) — A special mass will be held at 5 p.m. today, Saturday, at Our Lady of Victories (OLV) Catholic Church along 2217 Kennedy Boulevard in this city to kick off a year-long celebration of the 100th year since OLV held its first mass as a parish in 1917.

Today’s mass is open to the public.

This was announced by Fr. Victor Paloma, pastor of OLV.

In his announcement, Fr. Paloma said in part, “The historic celebration is not just a day, a month, or even a year. This celebration is a renewal of our faith and love of Christ and even among us. This is a beginning of another 100 years of our faithful.”

Fiorello Salvo, longtime OLV parishioner, was tapped by Fr. Paloma to chair the  Anniversary Organizing Committee.

The end-goal of the anniversary observance is to raise funds for repairs and renovation of OLV church and to invite new and existing parishioners to get involve more in parish activities.

According to Salvo, the following fund-raising projects had been lined up:

•Publication of Souvenir Journal

•Holding of gala night on Sept. 30, 2017 at Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J.

•Conduct massive parish membership drive

•Four trips to Atlantic City on different months

•Penny jars

•Sale of promotional materials, like hats, T-shirts and the like

•Flea Market

•Hiring of professional fundraising company
