JERSEY CITY — Helen Castillo (pictured above), program assistant at New Jersey City University (NJCU) and longtime leader and advocate in the Filipino-American community, has been selected to receive the 2018 NJCU Stars Employee Recognition Award for Community Service.

The awards ceremony will be held on Dec. 6, 2018 at the NJCU Student Union Building at noon.

This is the first time in the history of the NJCU Awards Program for employees that they are giving a community service award.

Castillo’s involvement with the Philippine American Friendship Committee, popularly known as PAFCOM, has been recognized by the school.

PAFCOM promotes a wholesome and friendly relationship between Americans and Filipinos in Northeast USA.

The Fil-Am awardee had been Executive Director and Chairperson of PAFCOM.

For the past 28 years, PAFCOM’s biggest task is to hold an annual grand parade and cultural show in New Jersey during the month of July to observe Philippine American Friendship Day.

This annual event is nearly as big as the annual New York Philippine Independence Day Celebration and has been featured and recognized prominently in Manila, American mainstream and local, as well as, Filipino-American newspapers.

In addition, she has organized and successfully rallied the community to help needy Filipinos, both here and in the Philippines.

She led a campaign to help the family of the New Jersey Fil-Am couple who died during a tornado in Virginia three years ago.

Castillo also led a campaign to raise funds for the victims of destructive Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Philippines in coordination with ABS-CBN Foundation.

She is at the forefront of activities that help seniors experience quality life activities that promote healthful living.

She led the political fund campaign of a Filipino candidate, who not only won an election as first elective Filipino-American official of Jersey City, but also, eventually elected by his peers to be president of Jersey City’s City Council.

Earlier, Castillo also received the following awards: Women of Action Award from the City of Jersey City; Volunteer of the Year award from New Jersey Governor; Community Leadership Award from the Pan American Community Action League (PACCAL), Jersey City; and Prism Award from Gintong Pamana Awards Foundation in Chicago.
