Exclusive to the Filipino Reporter

Undefeated Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta was all smiles after signing with Top Rank, Inc. last week.

The 23-year-old San Diego, California resident by way of Mandaue City, Philippines will make his debut on the undercard of the lightweight title fight between Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon July 9 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Gesta, who has knocked out four straight opponents, will risk his 21-0-1 (11 KO) record against an opponent to be named.

“I think we made the right decision,” said Gesta’s manager/trainer Vincent Parra, who had also been courting Golden Boy Promotions for Gesta.

Gesta began helping World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champ Amir Khan in sparring this past Monday and will finish up training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, which is home to Manny Pacquiao.

Gesta, who is ranked #2 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) sanctioning body, hopes that signing with Top Rank will lead him to the big fights he needs to be a breakout star.

“I feel happy that I’m already signed with a big promoter who can give me the big fights,” Gesta told the Filipino Reporter.

“They give me a good deal and they promised me to give a championship fight if they win this.

“I’m really excited for the championship, but I have to win the fight and look good.”

Aside from Gesta, Top Rank also promotes Filipino boxers Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire and Mark Jason Melligen.
