Embassy Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Minister Patrick A. Chuasoto answers questions from students at a brief Q&A session after his remarks at Georgetown University on Aug. 11, 2017.

WASHINGTON — Embassy Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Minister Patrick A. Chuasoto was the guest speaker at the International Diplomacy Conference held at Georgetown University on Aug. 11, 2017.

Chuasoto talked about diplomacy, the United Nations, Philippine foreign policy, Philippines-United States relations, and the Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN before 100 Junior and Senior high school students from all around the United States and other countries.

“To begin, I wish to emphasize that diplomacy takes time to bear fruit. A diplomat’s job is to find consensus, and to build it if none exists. This can never be done overnight. We can look at the work of the United Nations as an example. I can tell you that the United Nations has been successful in providing a common language among sovereign states, enabling them to interact meaningfully and, in many cases, collaboratively, on issues of global concern,” Chuasoto emphasized.

“The Philippines is a founding member of the United Nations. The historical arc of Philippine diplomacy shows a nation that subscribes to international principles and norms. As the oldest republic in Asia, the Philippines has a long tradition of advocating for democracy, peace, rule of law, and human rights,” he further added.

This year, the Philippines is chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which coincides with the region’s 50th founding anniversary.

Chuasoto in his remarks also highlighted ASEAN’s work and priorities, as well as its partnerships within and outside the region.

“We fully echo ASEAN’s sentiment for continued and active U.S. engagement in the region,” said Chuasoto.

He further underscored the strong and enduring alliance between the Philippines and the United States, and the contributions of the Filipino-American community in this longstanding relationship and in the promotion of mutual interests of both countries.

A brief Q&A also followed Chuasoto’s remarks where he fielded various questions on international issues, his experiences as a diplomat, and Philippine foreign policy and economic agenda.

The International Diplomacy Conference was organized as part of the National Student Leadership Conference that gathers outstanding high school students from across the United States and around the world to explore the qualities of effective leadership and gain an insider’s perspective of some of today’s most sought-after professions.
