Former U.S. Marine James Thomas Kakara with an unidentified woman.

TAGAYTAY CITY β€” A retired U.S. Marine was found beaten to death at his home in the Philippines on Christmas Day.

Police said that robbers used a metal pipe to kill 61-year-old James Thomas Kakara the day before.

He was alone in his house in the resort town of Tagaytay, near the Philippine capital of Manila.

His Filipina wife and her daughter had left to spend Christmas Eve with her family nearby.

They found his body the following morning, the Associated Press reports.

Police spokesman Agrimerf Cruz said the robbers took about $6,000, a cell phone and a laptop from the house.

Provincial police director John Bulalacao said the victim was a consultant for an American security agency and had lived in the Philippines for four years.

Kakara was a U.S. war veteran whose left leg was amputated.

Bulalacao said, β€œHe was alone at home at that time because his wife and the rest of the members of the family were out...for an overnight party and the following day, the American national was found dead.”
