Officers and members of the Association of Filipino Teachers of America during its 2012 awarding rites.

The search for “Ulirang Guro” (Outstanding Filipino Teachers) of America is now open.

This is the fourth time the search is being conducted since its inception in 2008.

The founder of the search, Lumen Castañeda, said the event was inspired by Metrobank’s yearly search for Ten Outstanding Teachers of the Philippines and since then has become a biennial event.

“The award not only aims to recognize exemplary teachers making a difference in the lives of American children and youth but also to honor the teaching profession,” Castañeda said.

So far, the project has awarded 23 teachers from coast to coast.

For 2014, there will be 15 official nominees from the elementary level, middle school, senior high school, business school and college/university levels.

The nominees are judged based on the documents they submitted and on interview by the pre-determined board of judges composed of teachers, retired teachers and a journalist.

Winners in March

The winners will be announced by the middle of March and the awarding on April 12 at a venue to be announced.

The project is currently funded by friends in the community and from the Philippines.
