JERSEY CITY, Jan. 1 — Despite temperature in the teens, and negative wind chill weather, Filipinos from this city and nearby townships trooped to City Hall to witness the inauguration of Mayor Steven Fulop and the elected members of the City Council led by Fil-Am Councilman-at-large Rolando R. Lavarro, Jr.

This was the third time for Councilman Lavarro to take an oath as elected council member.

For the first time in the city’s political history, a Filipino judge, Carlo Abad, Chief Judge of Jersey City Municipal Court, administered the oath of office to a fellow Filipino-American, Lavarro.

In a statement for friends and supporters, Councilman Lavarro said, “This oath-taking is special as it is the result of a great team supporting me and is a culmination of the work and success over the past six years, particularly the six months on the campaign trail. Thank you Jersey City for your trust and confidence.”

Lavarro received the most number of votes among council candidates in the November 2017 elections.

He had an impressive legislative record, including Earned Sick Days, Wage Theft Protection, and the Sanctuary City Resolution. Lavarro was first sworn in as Councilman-at-Large in November 2011.

In his inaugural address, Mayor Fulop rallied Jersey City residents to continue supporting his administration in moving the city forward.

During the past four years, the Fulop administration has increased the composition of the Police Department, improved city parks, increased and supported the number of small businesses, reduced unemployment and kept taxes stable.

In a post inaugural posting on Facebook, Mayor Fulop said, It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as mayor of Jersey City and today's inauguration at City Hall was beyond special. Thank You to all the residents that joined us today and thank you to the broader Jersey City community for giving me the chance to serve. I'm going to work every single day to continue to make you all proud.

Other members of the City Council who took their oath were Denise Ridley, Mira Prinz-Arey, Richard Boggiano, Michael Yun, James Solomon, Jermaine Robinson, Daniel Rivera (At-large) and Joyce Watterman (At-large).
